3424 Operating Brakeman Car

This car had never been restored since purchased used in 1988.

Brakeman Car Restored

Restored Car after Cleaning and Parts Replaced

See Parts Diagrams and Lists in Lionel Service Manual.  Front baseplate w/shoe #474-2 was replaced with reproduction part containing Special Collector Shoe #474-5. The insulation on wiring was crumbling and replaced with extra flexible SW22 #22 GAUGE BLACK; 105 STRANDED.

 

Both Trucks were Removed and Repaired.
Remove E Ring with Screwdriver Twist, Long Nose Pliers Open More, and Slide off.
(The correct Lionel part # for E ring is 671M-22 to stock extras.)

Blue Shoe Route Wiring
Wiring with cracked insulation replaced with #22 gauge Super-Flex wire by Wire Plex'

Back Truck with Special Shoe
The blue pickup shoe was a reproduction replacement with a poor installation. The Shoe Plate TC-109 was folded in at one end.  This car requires Special Collector Shoe 474-5.


 

The Trucks were Cleaned, Rewired, and Repaired

Part  9T-16 washer added after production.
Front Truck Bottom w Pickup Roller
Tie Wire on coupler can be replaced with small black zip tie.
Back Truck Bottom before Repair
Baseplate w Special Shoe #474-2 replaced.

 

After repairs, parts were cleaned with denatured alcohol.
The special shoe is activated by track clip added to the pole support that is the same as the Giraffe Car-3376-105. 
See Page 2 of the Lionel Service Manual with the Track Clip #3424-86.  The blade tops should be 3/4" apart.
